Spring Flower Trip Guide — Best Spots by Bloom Season

Korea transforms from late February through May as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and azaleas bloom in succession from south to north. The key challenge is timing — miss by a week and you'll find bare branches or fallen petals.

Bloom Calendar

Plum Blossoms (Feb-Mar)

Gwangyang Maehwa Village: Korea's largest plum blossom colony along the Seomjin River. Arrive before 9am during the festival to avoid parking chaos. Pair with Seomjin River cycling.

Yangsan Tongdosa Temple: A serene alternative — UNESCO-listed temple with both pink and white plum blossoms.

Cherry Blossoms (Mar-Apr)

Jinhae Gunhangje: Korea's biggest cherry blossom festival. Yeojwacheon stream and Gyeonghwa Station are iconic. Visit on weekdays — weekends are extremely crowded.

Hadong Simni Cherry Road: 6km tunnel along the Seomjin River, far less crowded than Jinhae. Combine with Hwagae Market for local food.

Gyeongju Bomun Lake: 8km cherry blossom path around the lake, with ancient ruins nearby. Rent a bike for the best experience.

Azaleas (Apr-May)

Yeosu Yeongchwisan: The entire mountainside turns pink. 2-hour round-trip hike. Combine with Yeosu seafood dining.

Hapcheon Hwangmaesan: Massive royal azalea colony at 1,100m elevation. Drive partway up for easier access.

Photography Tips

• Golden hour: Warm light before sunset makes petals glow, especially backlighting cherry blossoms
• Overcast days: Soft, even light produces beautiful flower colors
• After rain: Water droplets on petals create the most vivid photos

Avoiding Crowds

• Visit at sunrise or on weekdays
• Choose alternative spots (Hadong over Jinhae, Bomun Lake over Yeouido)
• Walk 100m from main photo zones for peace and quiet
